Reliable bicycle and pedestrian count data greatly benefit the planning process. Creating an on-going count dataset can better provide insights and data-driven support for future projects. (RGVMPO Active Transportation Plan, page 36)

With support from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation (VBLF) and Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council (LRGVDC), the first phase of the RGV Bicycle & Pedestrian Counter Data Program was initiated in 2020 and counters were installed throughout the region in 2021 to measure the use of trails.

The region's bicycle and pedestrian count data can be found on the Texas Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Exchange (BP|CX) Program. Developed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), the BP|CX serves as a central location to exchange, manage, review, and import and export count data.

This webpage is dedicated to provide instructions and current statistics for the general public and local government program partners. Questions or requests for bike/ped data analysis can be addressed to Eva Garcia, Planner III, at egarcia@rgvmpo.org AND Chris Nelson, Planner I, at cnelson@rgvmpo.org.
